Seascape with Dead Figures - Hardback
Seascape with Dead Figures
The body at the bottom of the cliff had once been George Winterton, in life a local bigwig with many a beneficent finger in many a local pie, but now the very late and very dead George Winterton. On this bitterly cold first morning of the New Year Detective Superintendent Roper would have settled for a quiet day with his feet up. Instead he had been detailed to look into what at first could have been an accident but which soon reveals itself as a particularly nasty piece of villainy.
Winterton had lived in style, and alone apart from his housekeeper. Estranged from his son for many years, he has attempted a reconciliation with him over the Christmas holidays and thrown a party for some local dignitaries on New Year's Eve. As Roper digs deeper into the case he soon discovers that everyone at that party had good reason to hasten George Winterton into a premature grave. Winterton was by no means the philanthropist he had led people to believe.
Roper's enquiries are thorough, and with the help of forensic evidence he soon learns how Winterton was killed. He also has a pretty shrewd idea who the instigator was, but proof of motive and opportunity is not so easily come by. Then, in a dazzling display of pure detection, he reveals the truth.
